Plot outline
Duke Leto Atreides, head of the Great House Atreides, and natural from Caladan, a paradisiac planet, has been chosen by the Emperor Shaddam IV to rule Arrakis, a desert planet (Dune is its colloquial name) that is the only source of a spice called melange, the most valuable substance in universe. To that planet he will move with his family, friends, army and servants, always aware of possible threats made by the Harkonnens, a Great House rival of the Atreides.

Comment without spoilers
This miniseries, despite not being a completely precise adaptation of the novel it’s based on, does a quite good job performing most of the events that appear in it, as well as showing us events not directly narrated in Dune. One of the points that can be more criticized about this adaptation is the notable subplot surrounding Princess Irulan, but it seems that it’s due to show some of the importance this character has in the following novels (which I haven’t read yet).

The narrative rhythm is very irregular, drifting from intense and thrilling scenes to really boring periods, in which you question yourself if this miniseries is worth watching (even more if you do it like me, watch it almost in one run). So, unfortunately, this leaves a sweet and sour taste in the spectator that it’s not good for the overall feeling.

Most of the characters retain perfectly the importance and behaviors they had in the novel, but some of them have variations in their way of being, like Paul, who in the beginning is very immature; or their significance, like the general lack of importance of Thufir or Yueh in the story (except in their really important scenes, of course).

Aside from the performance of Giancarlo Giannini, which is great, like always, the job of the rest of the cast is just decent, without any outstanding performance drawing attention.

The photography of the episodes is also rather irregular, but this time not in quality but in method, as sometimes the approach is very experimental and others really traditional. Anyway, probably the most notable aspect is the illumination technique, that resembles a lot the one used in theaters, with colorful spotlights, to heighten diverse characters or events.

Visually, Frank Herbert’s Dune is really colorful, both thank to the costumes and the scenarios, as well as the visual effects like the aforementioned spotlights. The computer generated special effects, for being 8 years old and for a TV production, looks quite OK.

The soundtrack is almost nonexistent, composed only by background noises, and sometimes, like in the actions or thrilling scenes, some electronic music to try make your heart pump a little bit faster.

The overall atmosphere of the miniseries is very good, making you feel completely immersed in the dessert planet of Arrakis, and concerned about its problems and situation. At least, I felt the urge of drinking water continuously while watching this Frank Herbert’s Dune.

To conclude the spoiler-free part of this comment, I want to say that watching this miniseries might be an interesting exercise if you have previously read the novel, but I wouldn’t do it if you haven’t. Also, if you give it a try, I don’t recommend to watch 2 episodes (or more) in a single run, because you may end really fed up of it (it almost happened to me, so…).

WARNING! SPOILERS!

In this spoilers part I don’t want to comment any important fact, just a curiosity. And that is that in the end of the 3rd episode, when Paul is riding the sandworm during the final attack, he goes down of it… jumping forward! that is, jumping in front of a moving sandworm! It’s just retarded xD.

Plot outline
This series revolves around Eric Cartman, Kyle Broflovski, Stan Marsh and Kenny McCormick, 4 third grade students living in a small town in Colorado called South Park.

Comment without spoilers
I have to admit that South Park never attracted my attention too much, and that aside from the movie and some random episodes, I havn’t watched much of it. However, since recently South Park Studios put all the episodes in their web to be watched via streaming, I decided to give it a try.

The episodes are mostly independent from each other (except in cases like the Imaginationland saga), and usually have an initial event that acts as a spark to ignite a plot with diverse twists used to chain one sketch with the next. Compared to the first episodes I watched some years ago, in which the episodes were just the mentioned chain, with no other purpose than being harsh and shocking; now beside being equally shocking, the sketches lie over sarcasm making parodies of big elements of the cultural and political way of life from the U.S.

The main characters have well defined behaviors, giving you an a idea on how their reactions are going to be. Also, they are quite bizarre (not only the main ones, but everyone), leading to hilarious scenes parodying, as I previously said, the U.S. way of life.

The soundtrack is quite simple, and is almost the same in every episode. And the general atmosphere of South Park is quite good, as they’ve been working on it for about 11 years.

The animation, which I think that is one of the most recognizable elements of this series, is very simplistic, using computer animation techniques to emulate the cut-out cartoons animation technique used by animation geniuses like Terry Gilliam.

So, it might not be the best series ever, nor the funniest one, but is very entertaining. Also, the easiness to watch it (streaming from the official web site), makes it win a lot of points in boredom times. But remember, if you can’t stand politically incorrect humor, don’t give it a try.

Plot outline
The third season shows the second year of residence of J.D., Elliot and Turk, while in the fourth season, they have finished their residence and at last they are full doctors. However, their relation with the rest of the personnel in the hospital doesn’t changes too much.

Comment without spoilers
I decided to write the comment about the 3rd and the 4th seasons together because, as it happened with the second one, they don’t add anything different from the first one, giving you the feeling that nothing is evolving and that always is happening the same.

Aside from the the guest appearance of Michael J. Fox in the third season and the recurrent presences of Tara Reid in both seasons and Heather Graham in the fourth, there’s not much to tell about the cast, as they keep doing the same good work as always.

In the characters part, I have to say that the only one who evolves during the four seasons is Todd. I must admit that in the beginning I didn’t liked him, but currently is my favorite one. The music has the same importance as in the previous seasons.

So, they’re interesting seasons, but the truth is that they don’t offer anything new, and the series seems to be completely stuck. I hope this changes in the next one, or I’m afraid I won’t continue watching Scrubs.

Plot ouline
This series narrates cultural behaviors and traditions of “Little Britain” through different short sketches centered around the lives of certain natives of the “country”.

Comment without spoilers
Little Britain doesn’t have a main plot, and most of the time neither the independent sketches. The thing most similar to a plot are the subtle evolutions that suffer some characters during their sketches, which, by the way, are completely weird (and funny).

The characters of the series, as bizarre as they are, are simply great, both because of their own charismatic behaviors and because of the fantastic characterization made by David Walliams and Matt Lucas, the true genius behind Little Britain.

The soundtrack is almost inexistent, and all the sketches only have background noise. However, sometimes in the transition from one sketch to the next (when the narrator makes its appearance), there’s an introductory tune.

The general atmosphere is very good, getting you to feel as if you were in the United Kingdom (the country about this series make real fun about). At least for me, that I’ve lived in England for 4 months, is as if I were back there.

So, a quite funny series, very recommendable if you want some easy laughs and you don’t feel offended by politically incorrect jokes.

Plot ouline
If the first season was about the first year of J.D., Turk and Elliot as interns at Sacred Heart Hospital, this one focuses in their second year at the hospital, as they have become residents. And as we previously saw, the series tells us the daily “routine” in the hospital through the point of view and J.D. and his daydreams.

Comment without spoilers
This comment is going to be quite short, because this season follows exactly the same concepts and has the same characteristics as the previous one, so most of the things I said about it are perfectly valid now.

The plot follows the same premises of the previous season, so there’s not much difference there. The only exception we can find is that in one episode (His Story), instead of J.D.’s, we follow Cox’s viewpoint.

The main cast is exactly the same, but at least this time I began to feel some more sympathy about Turk and Carla. And of course, the best characters are still the Janitor (who has more irregular appearances this season), Cox and Kelso.

The music is still one of the main points of each episode, and slowly keeps getting more and more importance during the season. Nothing to comment about the general background atmosphere.

So, the only thing I can say to describe this second season is that, in essence, it offers the same than the first one, but slightly better. So if you liked the previous one, for sure you’ll like this one also. My main concern now is to know if it’s gong to happen the same with the rest of the seasons, because if the 7 seasons are so similar… it can get boring at the end.

Plot outline
During the World War II, René is the owner of a café in Nouvion (France), a village occupied by the Germans. During his daily routines, he has to help the German commandant to hide valuable stolen objects and do his dirty work under the threat of being shot for disobedience. On the other hand, his café is used as safe-house by the Resistance by force, under the threat of being shot for helping the Germans.

Comment without spoilers
As it happened with the post about the previous series, this is going to be a very short comment, because there are little differences with season 1 and season 2.

The plot of this series is exactly the same as the previous seasons, but the huge difference is that the scripts here are in a new dimension, becoming much more complicated and with plenty of last minute twists. And the level of fun keeps rising and rising.

The characters also remains the same than in the previous season, but here General Von Klinkerhoffen and monsieur Alfonse gets a lot more importance, becoming almost main characters. Also, this is the last season in which we can see the Maria (one of the waitress of the café) in ‘Allo ‘Allo!.

Maybe is because the seasons of this series are very short, but it gets not only to keep the high level of fun and entertainment of its predecessors, but to improve it. I only wonder how did the writers to keep making funny scripts while talking about the same again and again. I hope to discover soon if they did also a good work with the fourth season :D.

WARNING! SPOILERS!

In this season there are some moments that are insanely funny, like when everybody tries to sneak into General Von Klinkerhoffen’s room to steal the knockwurst that hides The Fallen Madonna (With The Big Boobies); when they organize in the café the Spanish Carnival plot (with its dance, of course); or when they make a tunnel to go into the English prisoners campat the end of the last episode.

Also, the writers managed to add another picture to the plot of the fake pictures. So aside of the Van Klomp picture there’s also one from Van Gogh.

End of SPOILERS

Plot outline
20 years ago, Gominolas (the Spanish word for wine gums) was a successful music band formed by kids, but that success didn’t last long. Now, because of the dead of one of the former members due to drug overdose, the remain members meet again.

Comment without spoilers
This series is a situation comedy with a prominent part of drama, as the main plot of each episode comes straight from the miserable life of the characters. The rhythm of the episodes are very irregular, and they have a lot of incoherences and contradictions, in order to be able to create the different jokes.

The work of the cast is not very good, for their performances are very poor, and most of them does the same kind of characters they’ve been doing for years. The only exceptions are Lluís Homar and Gorka Lasaosa, being the latter unknown to me before this series. I only hope that Gorka has a wider range of performances than the rest of his partners in Gominolas. Also, a case apart (and not for good reasons) is Kira Miró, with an awful performance that only draws attention because she appears half naked in most of the episodes.

The characters of this series are completely archetypical, and they don’t really add any value, besides their misery to be used in the plots to create the situations that lead to the gags.

In Gominolas, as the series is based in a former music band, the music has its importance both in direct and indirect way. And thanks to the help given by Guille Milkyway the music that appears in this first season is really good.

I don’t know what to say about the general atmosphere, because there’s no solid background for any atmosphere to be sustained.

My conclusion is that this series is moderately entertaining, but not really interesting. In fact I don’t think I can recommend it to anyone with a minimum good taste. The only thing that worths something is part of the soundtrack.

As a curiosity, the title of every episode comes from the titles of very famous Spanish pop and rock songs.

By the way, this is a scheduled post… I’ve been since yesterday in Gothenburg and I’m away from my beloved MacBook Pro, but don’t worry, soon I’ll be back, writing posts about this city :D.

Plot outline
John Dorian (J.D.) is a medical student who joins the Sacred Heart Hospital as an intern, alongside with his friend Turk. There, always shown from the particular point of view of J.D., they’ll evolve both as people and medics with the help of cynic and sarcastic characters as Dr. Kelso, Dr. Cox or the janitor of the hospital.

Comment without spoilers
The plot of the series is very simple and easy to follow, focusing in the daily life of the characters and the events of the hospital, through J.D.’s always funny distorted perception of reality.

The cast chosen to incarnate the characters of this series generally do a fairly good job, and I can hardly think about those characters being performed by other actors, except maybe in the case of Turk, because I don’t think that Donald Faison suits him.

Besides all the main characters have remarkable aspects, the ones I like more are Dr. Kelso, Dr. Cox, the janitor and Elliot, as most of the situations they’re involved in are the funniest of the series. On the other side, I think that J.D., despite being the real protagonist, the only valuable thing that adds to the show is its way of perceiving life… which is not bad but it gives the feeling that the writers are not taking full advantage of the character.

The music has an important presence in this season, and is performed by a moderately wide range of artists between pop, rock, indie, etc.

The general atmosphere is good, but that is quite easy, as about 90% of the series happen in a hospital, so there’s not much needed to make you feel that in a credible way.

So, it may not be the best series I’ve ever seen, in fact it’s far from that, but the truth is that is a very entertaining season, and very easy to see and follow, not requiring any effort to watch it, as happened with, for instance, the first season of Damages.

Plot outline
Ellen Parsons finds herself running through the streets covered in blood and half naked. Jumping six months back in time, we discover that she’s a lawyer that have just finished her degree and who begins working for Patty Hewes, one of the most famous lawyers of New York City.

Comment without spoilers
The plot of this series is awesome, with a beginning that traps you completely and a very constant rhythm that doesn’t let you get off the hook. The development of the story is excellent and the management of the flashbacks and flashforwards is simply perfect.

The work of the different directors (and also from the directors of photography, from which I haven’t been able to get any information) is very good. For example, using visual perspectives that doesn’t show you the face of a determined character until the end of the scene. However, the best sequence from an artistic point of view are the credit titles of the beginning, which are awesome.

The work of the actors is also of a very high level, but I’d like to specially emphasize the work of 3 of them. Those are Glenn Close, who everybody already knew that was an incredible actress; Željko Ivanek, who was unknown to me until now and who did a great job; and surprisingly, Ted Danson, whom to me has been always a mediocre actor, but that in this series does an excellent job, forcing me to change my mind about him.

The characters that appear in this series are very credible and, most of all, essential, for everyone has something to add to the plot. Also, they’re charismatic and it’s difficult to find a dull personage.

The soundtrack is almost nonexistent, and in the 95% of the scenes the only thing you can hear in the background is the ambient noise. However, in the other 5% there’s a diluted score that emphasizes the events but that doesn’t distracts you and is almost unnoticeable.

With all the praises of the previous paragraphs, you know what to expect from the general atmosphere… is simply awesome, being very solid and absorbing, like the rest of the series.

As you can tell from the comment, I liked this series a lot. In fact, I watched the whole series in one day, without interruptions. So I highly recommend this season to everybody, because together with the second season of Dexter, I consider it one of the best TV series of 2007. And two more seasons have been announced… I hope they maintain the high level and it doesn’t happens to Damages what happened to Heroes with its second season.

This comment is going to be very short, because there’s not much difference between this season and the previous one, for there are minor improvements in the script and little changes in the cast, but the soundtrack and the general atmosphere remains the same.

The main plots remains the same as in the previous season, but the subplots are certainly funnier. As the presentation of all the characters and plots has been already done, there’s no feeling of rising slope in the quality of the scripts, which happened in the first series. Also, in the last episode (the Christmas Special), we see that the twists in the plot are risen to a new level.

The actors are mostly the same, and the performance has the same quality. The only major difference is the arrival of a new main character, which derives in a slightly wider range of situations. Aside from this, the German characters are still the most awesome of the series (together with René).

The adding of the new character and the stability in the plot’s quality of all the episodes makes that this season, despite being so similar, even better than the previous one, so it’s highly recommendable to watch it. But just a tip… it’s better if you begin with the first one.

WARNING! SPOILERS!

All the events related to the duel between René and Alfonse are really hilarious. However, the real improvement is in last episode, with the incredibly twisted plot in which everybody wants to kill Klinkerhoffen, but doing it on their own.

End of SPOILERS
